The winery was first established by the Monks of Zwettl Monastery in 1171, this is the oldest Austrian winery. Schloss Gobelsburg’s management was taken over by Michael & Eva Moosbrugger in 1996. Eight centuries later, inspired by the monastic ethos: simplicity and strictness, they produce wines with a unique character by preserving their authenticity. However they follow the traditional path of the monks, the wines are produced in an organically viticulture way. Schloss Gobelsburg is now one of the most awarded Austrian wineries.

Michael Moosbrugger has been awarded the best wine maker in 2006 by the Austrian magazine Falstaff, which is the most influential Austrian wine magazine and it is considered the highest recognition for a winemaker in Austria
