The London-based, Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET®) was founded in 1969 to provide high quality education and training in wines and spirits. Since then, WSET® has grown into the foremost international body in the field of wines and spirits education, with a suite of sought-after qualifications.

Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET®) is represented in 47 countries worldwide. Their qualifications are currently available in 13 different languages. Over 25,000 students sat WSET examinations in the last academic year.

Since 2009, EMW became an Approved Program Provider of WSET and intends to train trade and private customers with some quality wine training programs.

Over the past 10 years, the Chinese wine market has been growing immensely with new labels, grape varieties and producing regions. To underpin your knowledge with accurate information and increase your wine service skills, EMW organizes accredited WSET training programs. Our programs, from foundational level up to more advanced and specialized level, will guide you to the path of professional wine knowledge. The programs will introduce you to the market new requirements. As a wine Epicurean, get into your passion at a greater depth. The courses are provided in Mandarin and lectured in English and the examination can be taken in English or in Mandarin.

WSET Level 1 Foundation Certificate in Wines

International Wines - Foundation

The WSET® Level 1 Foundation Certificate prepares students for an entry-level job in hospitality or retail. The program delivers the basic product knowledge and skills required in the service and retail of wine. The Level 1 Foundation is also perfect for wine lovers who want to know more about the main grape varieties, as well as food and wine matching.

6 hours (plus 50 minutes for the examination)

Price: 2400RMB (including registration, wines for tasting and exam)

Examination: 30 Multiple-choice questions;

 

WSET Level 2 Intermediate Certificate in Wines and Spirits

International Wines and Spirits - Intermediate

 

The WSET® Level 2 Intermediate Certificate explores the wines and spirits of the world and includes a wine tasting in each class.


The program has been designed to provide vocational training in product knowledge for those employed in the drinks industry with little knowledge of the broad range of international alcoholic beverages. This program is appropriate for enthusiasts who are craving for wine knowledge.

It is ideal for those who are seeking a good level of product knowledge, advanced job skills and competencies in handling international wines and spirits. It also suits perfectly Epicureans who already have a basic wine knowledge.

17 hours (plus examination)

Price: 5800RMB (including registration, wines for tasting and exam)

 

Your tutors:

WSET programs administered in China are taught by WSET approved tutors. EMW has currently 2 WSET approved tutors.

 

David Qian,

He is one of the wine educators at EMW.  He developed a real wine passionate therefore he began to study food and oenology regarding all kinds of wines. He has been working in the FnB industry for the past six years.  From Jean Georges Shanghai, Marriott hotel Group, Hyatt Hotel Group to a Government residency; he gained experience as a certificated sommelier in high-end venues. In 2009 he won the 1st prize of “Sud de France” sommelier competition, and he is highly specialized in food and wine pairing.

Simon Hong,

Our Wine Educator Simon Hong has gained more than seven years overseas experience in the Food & Beverage industry. He graduated from Sydney Wine Academy, where he achieved Sommelier Certification III and WSET Advanced Certification. He has been working as the front of house supervisor for Bistro, Café, Club, Sommelier in Fine Dining Restaurant and five star hotels such as Kingsleys and Hilton Hotel in Australia. Simon has visited some of the most famous wine regions in Australia, which has fueled his passion of wine, and food and wine matching has become his specialty. In 2009 he was certified by UK’s WSET as a qualified Wine Educator. Only a few professionals have that qualification in mainland China.

Chris Kong,

Chris Kong has been working in the wine industry for 10 years. He is a Certified Bar Tender of the Level 2 and holds the WSET Level 3 Certificate. Always keen on sharing his wine knowledge and fantastic wine experience across China, he is one of the founding members of www.sowine.com.cn.

Our courses are arranged for limited groups in order to keep it friendly and personal. Wine enthusiasts are more than welcome to join in and deepen their wine knowledge.

Many attendees from international five star hotels and high-end restaurants have already successfully passed the exam and become certificated wine experts. Attending our comprehensive training was greatly beneficial for these participants.The training program provided many opportunities to review key points and exchange experiences with peers and customers. The WSET has boosted their confidence, making them more efficient in wine operations.

For the wine passionate who attended the program, the experience was positive as well. They were glad to have someone taking time to explain more about the diversity in grape varieties and the wine making process. Interacting with professionals was enjoyable for them, as they gained tips on how to choose their wine in restaurants. Thanks to the tasting techniques that were taught, these participants enhanced their self-confidence while talking about wines with friends or waiters in restaurants.
